31.03—01.10.17    Plain / Purl: Textiles between art and design Design museum Gent expo

From 31 March until the end of September, artists and designers working with textiles will be taking over the museum. The exhibition ‘Plain / Purl’ showcases textile design in a wider context of design, fashion, art and architecture.

This exhibition marks the tenth anniversary of the launch of the ‘Textile design’ course at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) of University College Ghent. The course’s open-minded vision takes centre stage in this exhibition, which juxtaposes works by international artists and alumni.

Works by Louise Bourgeois, Sonia Delaunay and Franz West strike up a dialogue with designs by Joanna Reuse, Leda Devoldere and many other alumni. Valérie Mannaerts, Kristof Van Gestel and Henri Jacobs have created brand-new works for this exhibition.

The project explores the boundaries of art and design, juxtaposing the two disciplines. Additionally, the works are - literally and figuratively speaking - brought down from their pedestals, in a scenography that showcases surprising visual assemblies. Expect works that transcend the boundaries of art and design, where the design, production process and final result coincide.

The exhibition ‘Plain / Purl’ is being hosted by Design museum Gent from 31 March to 1 October 2017.
It is a coproduction by Design museum Gent and KASK / Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) of University College Ghent with support from the Flemish Community.
In partnership with the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art (S.M.A.K.) and Manoeuvre.
